The interviewee, MAD Ouchi, has dedicated his life to connecting people and delivering rhythms that resonate with the heart through his drumming. He emphasizes that “the drums are not for me, they are for others.” Ouchi believes that music isn’t just self-expression but a means of supporting people and creating connection, especially in today’s fragmented society. His drumming provides a sense of togetherness and understanding, helping people feel connected in a world where isolation is common.

TONO: MAD, you’ve been playing the drums for years, crafting rhythms that move people. But what really caught my attention was when you said, “the drums aren’t for me, they’re for others.” What did you mean by that?

MAD Ouchi: Music isn’t just something I do to make myself feel good. Drumming, for me, is a way to connect with others and give something beyond sound. It’s like a heartbeat, a foundation that supports the band, the audience—everyone. That’s why I play.

TONO: I see, so you’re saying music helps form a community, bringing healing and connection.

MAD Ouchi: Exactly. Society today is fragmented; people are more isolated than ever. But rhythm and music can bridge that gap. When I play, it’s not about showing off; it’s about creating a space where people feel understood and connected, even if just for a few minutes.

TONO: That’s an interesting take—music not just as entertainment, but as a form of social responsibility. How do you approach these broader social issues through your music?

MAD Ouchi: Yeah, entertainment is part of it, but it’s not the whole story. Music has the power to bring people together, regardless of age or culture. In these times, with mental health and loneliness becoming such big issues, the rhythm of drumming can cut through that noise and give people a sense of comfort and unity.

TONO: So, you’re actively tackling these problems through music, on a very personal, heart-to-heart level.

MAD Ouchi: Exactly. It’s not flashy, but it’s real. I’m giving people an experience where they can feel less alone, like they’re part of something bigger. That’s what keeps me going.

TONO: That’s a powerful message. Your music isn’t just sound; it’s a lifeline. So what’s next for you?

MAD Ouchi: I’ll keep playing for the people who need it most. I’m curious to see how far this ripple effect can spread.

Who is it For?

MAD Ouchi’s music isn’t just for self-satisfaction; it’s for his listeners, bandmates, and the community. He believes that when music reaches someone and touches their heart, the meaning of his work deepens. His drumming serves as a beacon of support and comfort, particularly for those in modern society struggling with feelings of isolation and anxiety. His performances offer solace and strength, helping people break free from everyday stresses.

Why Does He Do It?

Ouchi continues to play music because of its transformative power. He highlights the altruistic aspect of music, stating that it’s essential to use one’s skills and talents for the happiness of others. His drumming aims to bring joy, smiles, and positive energy to those who listen. The sense of community fostered through music is another central theme in his work, with his drumming being an expression of “connection.”

Addressing Social Issues

Ouchi sees isolation as one of modern society’s greatest challenges and believes music can help resolve this. During the interview, he emphasized that music is a powerful tool for building and deepening relationships, helping to alleviate feelings of loneliness. In an era where social connections are weakening, he argues that music can provide people with opportunities to reconnect and better understand each other.

Ouchi also highlights the “power of rhythm” in reducing stress and mental fatigue. Drumming not only offers a physical release but also helps realign the balance between mind and body. He shares how rhythm can significantly impact both emotional and physical well-being, making it an essential part of his work in helping people live healthier, happier lives.
